Although it’s a short window, picking two year old winners between March and May can be profitable.
Finding winners is not easy and punters cast their net too wide to be successful. Here at Sunday we feel that by focusing on these types of races can help find you an edge as well as improve those vital race reading skills.
The timeframe of March to May is vitally important for 2yo’s as this is when the early season maidens are run over the minimum trips of five and six furlongs.
Assessing the field
The first task when assessing the field is to find those horses that have run once before and finished third or fourth. These horses are important because you know they will have learnt a lot from their debut and as the penny is dropping, they should go on to win. Connections won’t be thinking of pursuing a handicap mark either after such a promising first effort.
First time out
Always keep in mind that it’s very hard for a two-year-old to win first time out as generally, it’s their first day away from home and they won’t fully understand the art of racing just yet.
Pedigrees
You also want to take a look at the pedigrees of horses. As these maidens are run over short distances, speed is key. Look for those horses that have fast, sprint pedigrees and are by fast stallions such as Elzaam, Dandy Man or Mehmas. Try to avoid stallions that produce milers and middle distances horses because, while they might be classy, they shouldn’t have the speed to lie up with the more precocious types this early in the season.
Narrow down the field
You can probably now narrow down the field to three or four horses. Other important aspects when looking for winners is to choose your trainers carefully. Look for a trainers like Archie Watson or Paddy Twomey who know exactly what they’re doing, i.e. trained plenty of two-year-old winers and are high up the trainers championship list. Many of these trainers will also be eyeing up a trip to Royal Ascot with their better two-year-olds so keep that in mind when examining a race.
Now, you should be able to pick your winners. At Sunday, we want to help you, the punter, improve your methodology and that’s why finding your edge in early season two-year-old maidens will be an advantage.
